• The transits of Jupiter and Saturn through the 2nd house - about hopes, disappointments and earnings

When we have money issues, we're starting to look for ways to improve our financial situation. The first thought that comes to our mind is to look at our birth chart, specifically the 2nd house, and then try to interpret our potential for making money. Perhaps we're doing something wrong? Maybe our financial success can be achieved through areas of life we had no idea could work for us?
However, often times we know how to make money and we're good at it, but money still stops flowing or our financial situation starts to falter and we do not know what is going on and why.

Every planet in the 2nd house (and its ruler) will indicate what exactly has become a valuable resource, worthwhile our money. But the horoscope is not static - we are all subjects to cycles of change, smaller or larger. The horoscope with all its elements is a living entity, being in constant movement, thus is a subject to modifications. Our values, understanding of wealth and ultimately our attitude towards money along with our state of possession, will change over time. Is a loss of control over our finance a sign of possibly new sources of income entering our life?

One such moment of change are the Jupiter and Saturn transits through the 2nd house, indicating significant opportunities for material development, though not without a certain feeling of instability.

How to use these periods to improve our financial situation? Why are we disappointed with Jupiter and losing money with Saturn?

    Enjoy the reading :-)

    About the nature of transits

The presence of every transiting planet in the 2nd house modifies how we look at wealth. Suddenly we begin to feel other things become important to us, start to think differently about money and what contributes to our material security. For a shorter or longer period of time, we change priorities and enrich our own definitions of what is valuable. This is a chance to change our behaviour patterns and our attitude towards money, which will affect how much we earn. As the transit goes on, we're discovering our capability to do for money all the things we haven't considered before.

But Jupiter and Saturn transits are something more than just a change in the amount of money earned - they are opportunities to move forward, entering new, uncharted waters.

To me, transits in general mark our maturity and readiness to proceed with our individual development, giving us opportunities to manifest our inner need to go forward. Transits are not a source of random events, but represent moments of integrating certain lessons of our self-development.

From all transiting planets, Jupiter and Saturn have the most significant effects on the house they transit (like the 2nd house). They last long enough for us to notice tangible effects (compared to the transits of the Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars) and short enough so that the meaning of a particular transit doesn't fade with time, like it's happening with transits of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, that can last tens of years in one single house.

From a personality development perspective, a transit is a significant event, but all these changes that come with it may require from us to develop features/awareness that may seem foreign to us. Often times we're accustomed to our money management habits and the way of perceiving money - all of this doesn't promote considerations and the introduction of changes into our lives. Not everyone will be willing to change their approach to money according to Jupiter or Saturn teachings; not doing so will result in stories of disappointment and how "transits don't work".

But one thing at a time. So how exactly does our approach to money change with these particular transits?

    Jupiter transiting the 2nd house

Jupiter entering our 2nd house means that freedom becomes a valuable resource. Now freedom means the ability to "spread" in any direction we take and that kind of approach will accompany us whenever we decide to buy/invest into something. Every venture we're willing to spend money on will have to be a source of new and exciting experiences. And vice versa - the more certain ventures can broaden our horizons, the harder it is to resist spending money on them.

When we look at the direction Jupiter pulls us into, it is easy to explain why Jupiter's presence is the 2nd house is often associated with large expenditures. Experiencing freedom means developing, being in motion and to do so we often need the money. Those intriguing travels or brand new interest won't pay for themselves (although with Jupiter, they just might!)

Freedom is not everything. With Jupiter in 2nd house, what becomes valuable is:

    - awareness (any feeling) that we can
    - feeling rich and abundant, thanks to spending money on our whims and tasting life, without saving

In case of Jupiter, it doesn't matter whether we spend money on something that will last a day or one year. What matters is the inner feeling that we can and want to do something for ourselves i.e. pursue the education that will help earn more or go for that trip that will renewal our soul.

By setting money into motion, one develops a sense of faith in one's own resourcefulness. By that I mean I mean resourcefulness that is not only a result of making actual money, but above all spending money on what matters the most.

Fortuna favet fortibus  - Fortune favours the bold

A few words about the nature of Jupiter. Do you often hear stories of people who managed to achieve something great in a particular field? Jupiter inspires us to reach for these big goals, activating energy and optimism within us.

They key attitude that is the foundation of every Jupiter's success, is to be courageous, willing to try new things. Once this attitude is adapted, we gain self-confidence that attracts even more opportunities for growth.

And sometimes with Jupiter ... we're just lucky. One of the factors that makes Jupiter periods coincide with fortune and financial success is the "being at the right place at the right time" factor. It may not always be obvious, but at the end of the transit (when Jupiter leaves the 2nd house) we have a full picture of the situation and notice that we, indeed, were lucky to have been where we were.

On the other hand, our development (especially in case of more dynamic natal placements of Jupiter i.e. in Fire signs or in aspect with Sun, Mars) could mean us taking initiative and taking steps towards attracting fortune rather than waiting for a lucky break. This is exactly why developing the self-confidence is so much important - as you start to take initiative, self-confidence kicks in and you begin i.e. to value your own time more, deciding to raise the price of your services or create new (even if temporary) sources of income. And in the end, it's a win-win situation! And the joy of making money is the fuel that drives you to be more in motion, keeping the momentum.

Jupiter transiting the 2nd house makes us attract opportunities to improve our financial situation. The initiators of financial change could be other people with their increased interest in our services or skills. The period of this transit coincides with the time our investments (in our development that happened when Jupiter was in 1 house) start to pay off.

Material success achieved by our own initiative or luck - in each of these scenarios what matters the most is our approach. Jupiter promotes being:

    - engaged in your own development and future
    - in motion, so that we can develop according to our potential. And money and everything else is only a physical confirmation that we are going in the right direction

    How to earn with Jupiter?

You need to reach for most, if not all, opportunities. Jupiter's transit is a time when great self-confidence is promoted. Although earnings will not always be certain, by opening up to opportunities and moving beyond self-imposed limitations, you can open doors that will lead to big money. You never know what will and will not benefit you - only a bold approach can help you see that.

A couple of tips for Jupiter transits and the 2nd house cusp in fire signs (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius):

Jupiter's nature is similar to that of the Fire element, thus fortune will be attracted thanks to the concentration on Self and the relentless insistence on one's own needs and viewpoints. But you have to remember not to hurt others because of the Fire's confident and forceful way of being/doing things. If you believe in success, try and see what happens. The world will not do everything for you; often you'll have to put yourself in the limelight - nature needs help sometimes.

The Fire element means a flame and where there is a flame, there is a risk of getting burnt. But Fire element people must learn to get up and try, no matter how hurt. In other cases, the unbridled desire to spend money on yourself can lead to burning ... yourself, and from that there are only a couple of steps to extravagance, exaggeration and recklessness in handling money.

Jupiter transits and the 2nd house cusp in air signs (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius):

The Air element is strongly associated with intellect and thought, so Jupiter supports earning thanks to communication - sending the thoughts, but also receiving them. It is worth to consider any opportunities to educate oneself or spending time in the company of proper people that will help acquire skills and knowledge needed to earn money.  Putting your own mind into motion will make people appreciate our opinions and thoughts, which often translates into money.

It is said that curiosity is the first step to hell, but life without curiosity would be boring. Jupiter's influence can highly stimulate one's curiosity, although that can lead to a shake-up of balance between actual possibilities and the abstract ideas. And in the end there just disappointments, because "ideas didn't work out".

Jupiter transits and the 2nd house cusp in earth signs (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn):

People with this particular 2nd house placement have a practical approach to money, which in extreme cases can lead to conservatism and skepticism related to new opportunities. The Earth element doesn't feel comfortable when something disturbs its peace and doesn't like situations that make one lose something the Earth people have worked hard to earn. Jupiter in the 2nd house makes one prone to additional spendings, but people with the element of Earth on the cusp of the 2nd house would benefit from looking at these expenditures as investments in themselves.

At its best, Jupiter adds strength, making it easier to care about one's own interests effectively. Jupiter also broadens whatever it touches, so the end result of this transit are tangible skills, helping one manage his/her financial situations. Often times, it will not be important to invest time on several opportunities, but choosing one and focusing on it. The element of the Earth and Jupiter know that if one is meant to earn, one will earn, all it takes is dedication and consistency.

Jupiter transits and the 2nd house cusp in water signs (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces):

These type of people, during Jupiter's transit, discover that rich inner life can be translated into a rich material life, but first they need to identify what kind of work produces positive emotions. Feelings are often an extremely powerful motivating force - the Watery signs know that emotions or other subtle factors play a key role in their lives, and because of that a higher awareness (obtained via Jupiter) helps them to better understand themselves and others. And it is empathy, care or opportunities that allow to connect to others, that will help these people earn more. If the Water people managed to awaken positive feelings in other people, they are more likely to pay for the services!

Jupiter expands, so any uncontrolled reactions related to excessive buying may get worse. Conscious investing in Self at the material level will help the Water signs to discover the nature of their emotions and desires, allowing the emotions to flow more harmoniously.

Why am I not getting loads of money with Jupiter?

Have you ever had the opportunity to experience any Jupiter transit, waiting for a favourable opportunity just to feel disappointed by the end of the day?

When we are open to the world, truly want and are not afraid to develop, we instinctively attract fortune, knowing that in the end everything will work out to our advantage (even if we have no idea how exactly this can happen). There is no need to think about anything.

But by itself, the ability to attract fortune is not enough. Jupiter's energy (luck and opportunity to experience prosperity) has a problem with externalizing when our approach to money is very conservative and we value safety more than any form of taking action. The issue is the unwillingness to move away from the comfort zone.

With a reserved attitude towards finance, Jupiter's transit often comes down to learning how to identify opportunities for earning money. In my opinion, feeling disappointed with Jupiter often is a result of not seeing what we can benefit from (what can help us grow), allowing financial opportunities to disappear. Depending on the birth chart, Jupiter's financial development may require a lot of effort, turning towards a broader group of people or trying other ways of managing money.

The 2nd house shows what has a tangible value for a person. Contrary to what you might think, it doesn't have to have anything to do with material things, as emotions or ideas can be as real and "tangible" as any item. And for that reason, Jupiter transit through the 2nd house will not always leave us with a lot of money in the bank account, but will always enrich us by showing what exactly has value to us. [I've written about it more extensively in my previous article about the 2nd house!]

Before Jupiter brings us the opportunity to earn, we need to know which of our features are just common-sense and healthy scepticism, and what is just an internal blockage that prevents us from moving forward.

Contrary to common knowledge, the feelings of disappointment accompany Jupiter periods, though they are not as overwhelming as with Saturn. When that type of feeling occurs during any transit of Jupiter, it is a signal that we want something more from life - we want to open up, but for some reason we fail. Such feelings are supposed to encourage movement in order to discover what is the most valuable for us. I think it is worthwhile to distinguish between the sources of "negative" emotions, because the discouragement caused by the desire to progress forward is different from the discouragement caused by internal blockages.

From this point of view, Jupiter's transit through the 2nd house isn't as much about the money, as it is about learning how to rise above the limits, entering a higher state of awareness with more confidence, through the experience of money.

    Saturn transiting the 2nd house

There's a popular saying "time is money" and I think this is one of the best definition of Saturn in the 2nd house I've ever heard. When we start this particular transit, time becomes a resource we learn how to skilfully manage.

In order to deeply (the Saturnian way) understand the meaning of this period for our personal growth, it is worth to ask ourselves few questions:

    - what in our life is worth the time investment?
    - how valuable are the things we invest a lot of time to?
    - are we doing something only to meet responsibilities and not getting any long-term benefit for it?

By asking questions and seeking answers to them, we're learning how to retrospect, which helps us to discover and define what is valuable in our life. And the most significant values (resources) are not associated with what the outer world or environment is promoting, but with our internal life, character and our own experiences.

In order for us to ask the right questions and find our private treasure, we must have a proper motivation. The ideal source of "motivation" (for Saturn) are the circumstances associated with a limited cash inflows. As it so happens, with Saturn in the 2nd house we are more likely to reduce our consumption, rather than going for courageous investments that give only temporary benefits.

Having less (cash or other resources) forces us to really reflect on what is worth our effort and time. Under Saturn influence, we subconsciously strive to make our investments "profitable" in a longer perspective. We instinctively feel truly long-lasting things are the most valuable things for us, thus Saturn in the 2nd house favors changes in the way we manage money. And even though these changes are hard, they are always good for us in the long run.

Saturn transits through the 2nd house are often experienced as particularly painful, because the various limitations apply to a very practical sphere of life that directly relates to the "status of our functioning". Now this makes us focus only on the physical, outer aspect of money, thus not seeing a broader perspective. Sometimes we'll have to start a job, uncomfortable from the position of time/energy investment, in order to survive. Or even adapt certain money habits we'd avoid, providing we had the money.

The thing is, this transit of Saturn is not really about earning more or less than before - our frustration will not pass until we connect to our internal world and define the meaning of money in our whole existence. With Saturn, we are always building something and unhealthy habits (from the perspective of our true personality) can be built as well. At some point the transit will end and we'll be in completely new circumstances (cycles of change), but acting upon old habits. Avoiding Saturn's lessons, escaping the inner pressure, will result in integrating habits that feel empty and shallow, thus causing frustration when we'll try to find ourselves in the new cycle. And not to mention the unlearned lessons will someday return...

     "Time is money"

One of the situations you can experience during the Saturn transits through the 2nd house: loads of responsibilities make us realize how little time we have. After a while, we can discover how tired we actually are. Although we make money, it doesn't really give us satisfaction. Somewhere in the back of the head we have pictures of our friends, other people living better, having fun while we have to work.

The transit of Saturn encourages us to put time to our hierarchy of values and ask ourselves: do I prefer to spend my time on earning money or using it for pleasure / hobbies / loved one? These are just examples of what really could matter; for more information, one has to interpret the natal position of Saturn.
Often times the answer is not black and white. Responsibilities, dead-lines, bills etc. make it impossible to pick one line of thinking while completely discarding the other.

Do we manage our time well? Can we accommodate all needs? If not, what is lower in the hierarchy that we can give up on?

Regardless of our decisions and life's situation, it is certain that with Saturn we will redefine the value of time in terms of our capabilities and needs.

    Money, money ...

Another 2nd house Saturn situation:  loads of responsibilities make us realize how little time we have. After a while, we can discover how tired we actually are. Although we make money, it doesn't really give us satisfaction. We spend, we consume, but at the end of the day there's this lingering feeling of insufficiency.

Did we really want to spend money on this exact item?

Or maybe we can't enjoy money, because we do not spend / invest it in ourselves? Do we need to buy these elegant shoes when we have several pairs in the closet already? Is it worth buying something that will only be useful for a short while?

Saturn in the 2nd house is about the attitude: every little bit of money must be spent with care only on those things that, in the long run, will be beneficial or are beneficial in general for us (as in, not total crap). The benefit can be a healthy habit of saving to later purchase an apartment (because we want to live according to our own rules), car (like rides and mobility), 2-week trip to the island paradise. Long-term benefit is all we consider important.

Waiting out Saturn -  worth it?

Is it possible to start new financial chapters with Saturn in the 2nd house? Is it only a time of savings and survival in difficult conditions? Or perhaps it is better to wait out this period, refraining from taking any actions?

There are no clear answers to these questions. New ventures under Saturn's influence often are unsuccessful, or the profits are negligible. But such a state of affairs is not a matter of the planet itself, but our expectations. Saturn's benefits come after phases of long preparations, planning and hard work. Saturn yields crops after we have seeded and have been acting from the position of full awareness.

When there are no seeds, Saturn in the 2nd house offers the opportunity to sow them - creating a  foundation for future profits. And from the foundations alone, there's rarely any money that we could use for yesterday.

Saturn's fame as the greatest malefic often results in advice similar to this: don't do anything, don't start anything, wait until the transit passes. When I find myself thinking like this and hesitating to take action, I try remember a certain comparison ...

Life comes down to a journey. Every moment of our life, we're going somewhere, until at some point we encounter traffic lights. The lights show when one needs to go forward (green), when it's time to stop (red) and when to make a decision (yellow) - will I manage to pass through or do I need to slow down?

Sooner or later, we will come to a point of our journey that'll makes us come across the red light, forcing us to stop. The symbol of finding the "traffic lights" (and the red light) in our life could be a hell lot of work and our body (and/or emotions) telling us we can no longer function in such a life style.

To go or not to go?

Transit of Saturn through the 2nd house is like encountering on our way the traffic lights with the red light. Now is the time to stop. Why?

You stop at the red light, because that is a necessity, that is the rhythm or order (Saturnian words). This is the right time to reflect and ask the right questions (I listed them at the beginning of the chapter). But these questions are rarely asked - and no wonder. As a society, we are so accustomed to moving forward in life that any rest (stop) areas are treated like something to be avoided. Because stopping is not moving.

But you don't stop to wait, but to .. move forward, according to your rhythm. This is an often forgotten fact about Saturn transits; many people don't understand all the Saturn's "delays", thus end up turnings against this planet. Saturn restrictions are nothing like "stop, end of the line, wait until the transit passes".

Even when you stop on the red light, you are not really standing in place, because in a bigger perspective, you're moving - you're heading in a certain direction. Stopping is also a part of the movement process - actually thanks to stopping, one can gather more strength to be able to go even further.

To summarize: waiting out in terms of money management is a certain type of strategy that works when you do not want to invest your own time and energy into anything. But when you are looking for something sustainable in your life, like a stable source of income, this strategy can become an obstacle, standing in a way of experiencing yourself in a deeper manner.

What can you gain thanks to the Jupiter and Saturn transit through the 2nd house?

Jupiter and Saturn are a pair - both planets are related to growth, although each of them promotes a different strategy. Both planets need each other to be able to manifest themselves according to their nature. As an example let's use "Luck for money" - the first thought of anyone needing cash would be to look at Jupiter, being the "dispenser of happiness", forgetting about Saturn altogether. But Jupiter by itself may not be enough ...

I think "Luck for money" happens when the Jupiter's opportunities to shine meet the Saturn's preparations. All of this doesn't negate anything from the hard-work, it's merely when your hard-work finally pays off.

One of the issues with Jupiter in 2nd house is the belief in financial success that has no basis in the reality and real capabilities. Sometimes one will get something for free without effort, but it will only be a temporary benefit, quickly passing away later on. Without Saturn and its teachings about common-sense or discovering values that reflect the true nature of a person, there is nothing permanent.

On the other hand, the problem of Saturn in the 2nd house is a too short-sighted perspective. Saturn often symbolizes following one's experience (the past) when it comes to money management - this planet is like an inner voice, telling us how much we may fail. So the Saturn's cold judgment of our current financial situation, is a result of our past and the conditioning of the society.

This internal judgment does not see the present, so it is actually a distorted judgment. But thanks to Jupiter influence we can notice how fate smiles on us and understand that changes can come and we are not attached to our past. This is the Jupiter's "broader perspective" that you can read about in the textbooks.

I believe that one can get a insightful perspective on one's current change cycle after looking at the Saturn transiting the 2nd house along and then searching for the house that is transited by the Jupiter, and vice versa. Such an "exercise" teaches that one single transit is not an isolated event from our whole natal chart! We're all in a certain cycle of change that consists of many transits simultaneously.

    1. Jupiter/Saturn conjunction in Aquarius of Dec 2020 will happen exactly on my 2nd house cusp. I feel that is great! Jupiter is hope and Saturn makes it real. Great combo.
