• Scorpio and Pisces - nuances of the water trine, part 2

The trine - a promise of success and ease of obtaining it?

In my previous article, I've been describing the basic dynamic between the signs of Scorpio and Pisces, deliberately focusing on the differences and possible misunderstandings between them.

It's easy to explain this dynamic keeping in mind these two signs are separate beings, reacting to each other. But the Scorpio-Pisces trine can be about ... the horoscope of only one person.

How do you look at the trine in this particular case? What can go wrong?
Time to have some fun and look at the horoscopes :-)

About the Scorpio-Pisces trine basing on the horoscope of Drew Barrymore

Basic information to get us started.

Drew Barrymore was an example of a person with a successful carrier, when she was only but a child. By the age of 10 she  played roles in many movies like Altered States (1980), Irreconcilable Differences (1984), Firestarter (1984) and especially in  E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982).

At the age of 9 Barrymore even received a nomination for the Golden Globe for the Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her role in Irreconcilable Differences (she played a young girl trying to divorce her parents).

Drew Barrymore owes her early success to her talent, although her name played a big part in it as well. Drew belongs to a famous family - the Barrymores - known, throughout many generations, for their acting. We can imagine she had a tremendous support from her parent's contact with the acting environment, providing some necessarily early exposure.

But where's a big glory, there's an equally big shadow. Barrymore's childhood was, gently speaking, difficult and turbulent.

Drew Barrymore's parents split up when she was 9 years old, with her mother taking custody. And with this, a new chapter of her life has begun - a "faster" life. When being a young girl, she was a regular at one of the most popular (in that time) night clubs, smoking cigarettes at 9, drinking alcohol at 11, smoking marijuana at 12 and coke at 13.

That's not all. She entered her rehab at 14, spending many months in an institute for mentally ill. That's where she had her first suicide attempt. In the future she'll enter rehab again along with another suicide attempt.

Drug problems were common in the Barrymore family. Her grandfather, John Barrymore, considered the most esteemed actor in the Barrymore line, died from alcohol-related cirrhosis of the liver. Drew's father, also John, alcoholic-actor, has been put, multiple times, to jail for possessing drugs. Drew's mother also wasn't the best example of a good parent.

With such heavy experiences, accompanied by emotional problems and lack of parental authority, Drew Barrymore's carrier was slowly falling apart.

Ultimately Drew Barrymore managed to get out of her addictions (liberating from the strong grip of the past), return to the acting path, slowly building a new image (as an actress and a director) and achieving a success comparable to her great talent, for example creating her own production company  called "Flower Films".

    Water trine - interpretation

In order to understand how any trine works in a horoscope, I'm always focusing on three basic elements:

    - what planets take part in the aspect; their nature
    - in which houses are these planets
    - which houses do these planets rule in the horoscope

Drew Barrymore's water trine consists of Sun in Pisces and Uranus in Scorpio.

Is there something distinctive about the relation of Sun and Uranus?

Both planets rule the signs (Leo and Aquarius, respectively) that are in opposition to each other.

At this stage it's worth to ask: how's Leo and Aquarius connected?

People expressing the energy of Leo, Sun, focus on a very important (for them) aspect of life - themselves. In this context Aquarius, Uranus is more "worldly", aspiring to improve the life of a broader group of people - the society, in which they are in.

Here we can see the first signs of the opposition (of attitudes) between the signs, planets. Both Leo and Aquarius want to be themselves, although Leo puts more emphasis on the social life with him playing the lead role, while Aquarius takes into account the right of all people to be themselves.

Let's ask ourselves "Is the Sun selfish?". I think the answer is yes.

Now let's ask the same question about Uranus - "Is Uranus selfish?" I think the answer is ... also yes, in most of the cases. The keyword for Aquarius, Uranus is "humanitarian" , but Uranus searches for excitement, novelty, getting out of the routine ... for itself. It is Uranus that doesn't to be like others, it is Uranus that wants to stand out, picking unconventional paths.

The Sun-Uranus connection is not about being Yourself, but being yourself ... fully, free from constrictions.

Unfortunately, Uranus' energy  has the tendency to lead towards extremes in behaviours. The feeling of excitement, will to experiment is like a drug - encourages you to go further, try even more, rise even more above. All of this with unmoving stubbornness.

It has a lot to do with constant agitation, feeling you either win (it goes MY way) or lose (it doesn't go MY way).

This is exactly how Drew Barrymore behaved. Is there a better way to taste life, feel some adrenaline than by having fun in good company? Barrymore's Ascendant is in Gemini, strengthened by Mercury in Aquarius (Mercury likes Air element). Having so much Air, Barrymore was curious about meeting many new people, hearing their stories, seeing how one can spend their time.

Here's a quote from one of Barrymore's interviews1, showing the strength of her Air element:
' I'm very sensitive to the English language. I studied the dictionary obsessively when I was a kid and collect old dictionaries. Words, I think, are very powerful and they convey an intention.'
    1http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/film/7919486/Drew-Barrymore-interview.html  (2016 r.)

The closest environment for young Barrymore was her family, although it was not about the blood relatives. It was the " family of actors", meaning the whole acting environment. Drew Barrymore, having her 4th house ruler in the 10th house, found the security and family atmosphere at work, among actors, directors.

For Drew Barrymore, having such a known acting family, it was obvious that home meant playing, show, spectacle (IC in Leo). Home could have been something broader, more subtle in nature like atmosphere, emotions felt when playing a role (Sun, ruler of Leo, in Pisces).

    Sun - Uranus trine

The trine is said to give spontaneous abilities, talents, a mode of understanding, which one can use and develop with ease and consistency. Was Drew Barrymore able to easily develop her own Self, ambitions (Sun) while being in a carousal environment, having fun (Uranus)?

History shows ... no, she wasn't able to do it. With time, indeed, she succeeded, but it was a long walk and her trine didn't guarantee she'd make it.

How did her water trine manifest? Another quote from Drew2 :
' My own mum cared about Hollywood and I didn’t. I wanted to act and I loved the creativity of it, but I didn’t care for the lifestyle '
    2http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-1256599/Drew-Barrymore-comes-terms-troubled-past-Im-happier-I-ve-been.html

Drew Barrymore was instinctively pulled towards the highest, most harmonious expression of the Sun-Uranus aspect - love of the Sun with the unrestricted creativity of Uranus.

Unfortunately, the doorway leading to acting was the environment, living a specific life style. Drew Barrymore, being only a girl, was faced with a situation forcing her trine to guide her through the life abyss known as escapism, represented by the acting environment.

Trine, meaning an intuitive understanding, harmonious self-expression - all of this was not enough; Drew acted passively and accepted the environment.
Let's try to add houses to the interpretation.

    Trine connecting the houses

Barrymore's water trine forms between the 5th and 10th house.

In it's best expression this suggest one's abillity to transition from our passion, activities that bring us fun, to work. Leading our carrier in such way grants us exposure and we're feeling we put our own spirit (something unique) into the social space.

All of this with faith in oneself and ease.

In a nutshell - the 5th-10th house relation is about inputting the equal sign between passion and carrier. But trines have many complexities in them and one of their challenges is to meet the (often different) needs of every house.

Entertainment, experiences allowing us to feel personal fulfilment (level of 5th house) are highly based on liberty of self-expression.

On the level of the 10th house we're dealing with duties, certain structures, which can smother our creative freedom. On this level, we're mostly following our capabilities, not our hearts.

A person with a trine between the 5th and 10th house wants to combine their passion with what they're doing in the society. One of the biggest difficulty of the trine is its instinctive reaction to problems. When facing tangible obstacles, the trine becomes passive, thus not becoming a source of energy to overcome the issues - it just doesn't give the momentum.

One day the time will come, when our creativity won't produce the performances, works of art, allowing us to sustain on the material level and be properly recognized. Often the fact we're passionate about something, doesn't mean we have the proper skills to follow a certain carrier path associated with our passion. Every person having in their horoscopes a contact between the 5th and 10th house (be it an aspect between planets in those houses or aspect between the rulers of those houses) will face this particular problem.

Drew Barrymore's 5th-10th trine didn't manifest as discarding the acting, although for a certain period of time (after getting out of the addiction) she's done other lines of work like cleaning toilets. Drew's problem was the inability to be creative, present herself in more movies (5th house) while being in the acting environment (10th house) that supported drugs.

On the other hand, Drew found trouble making an acting carrier (10th house) while using drugs to get high and unwind. We can imagine the consequences the drugs had on her health, vitality (Sun), social status (10th house) and the possibilities to play in more movies (5-10th house).

No talent or inner understanding symbolized by the trine can protect from the destructive influence of circumstances, atmosphere and people associated with the houses connected by that trine.

Can't protect until one uses the trine with awareness.

Unfortunately, Drew Barrymore was young, inexperienced in life, probably wasn't aware that there are alternative ways of living. On top of that she had a mother, who was more of a disappointment than a protective shield (look: natal Moon conjuct Saturn). The sum of all these factors resulted in Drew not being able to confront her problems - she chose the easy way, because the trine likes to accept what fate brings into our life.

Sun, ruler of the 4th house, even when trine Uranus, manifested in such way3:
‘I grew up in a family that was multifaceted, sexually oriented, and pretty much open to everything. And because I was working, my friends were all adults.'
    3http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/you/article-1256599/Drew-Barrymore-comes-terms-troubled-past-Im-happier-I-ve-been.html

Can you blame Drew Barrymore for how she used her trine? Because of her young age she hadn't developed a backbone, perspective thinking and the ability to analyse one's behaviour in order to see the consequences of one's actions (that is typical for Saturn).

Her natal Moon conjunct Saturn is more than enough to provide her with support in this matter, but like everything Saturn-related - you have to work long and hard to earn it.

Saturn is not charity - here you get kicked in the ass, fall and try to get up (in pain).

    Using the trine with awareness

How did Drew Barrymore manage to get away from drugs, having a water trine? One look at her horoscope and we see that Sun is the ruler of both 3rd and 4th house and Uranus rules the 10th and 9th house.

Teenaged Drew published (9th house) her autobiography called "Little Girl Lost", describing her deep and overwhelming period of loneliness from 6 to 16. The possibility to convey her emotions into paper (3rd house) was a way of dealing with her childhood, way to objectively look at: herself, her roots and moments, where it all began (4th house). Thanks to that Drew managed to go forward and not give up. She started to slowly climb the acting-carrier ladder, transforming her image (10th house) step by step.

1st of January 1990 is the date when Drew Barrymore's first book was published, time unknown. For the reference place I have picked the publisher's headquarters - New York, NY, USA.

Drew managed to deal with her problems with the help of none other than Saturn, transiting the sign of Capricorn at that moment.

It just so happens it was the time of Saturn's opposition to her natal Saturn in Cancer. This is a special period, during which we are learning we are not the smartest and need to adjust.

We can imagine Drew's book was a tangible proof of her "growing up" , being able to deal with her over delicacy, trusting in the support of the water trine. Sometimes one cannot be passive and accept the circumstances, trusting one will feel better later on (trines tend to offer that kind of attitude).

You don't write a book in one evening - you need to dedicate a lot of time for introspection, think what you want to say and how. Drew Barrymore experienced three passes of Saturn transit over her natal Saturn, with her last one happening on the beginning of December, 1989. This speaks of achieving maturity, ending a certain process of acquiring awareness and through that liberating from the emotions, yearnings present in the subconsciousness (something that happens often with water signs).

It is interesting to notice the Sun - Uranus conjunction happening in the sky at the moment of the publication. On top of that it is in the most mundane of the signs. This symbolism is like a cherry on a cake.

There is no better way than the transits of Saturn to "sort out Drew's emotional life". This transit was a trigger, allowing her to develop according to her natal chart's potential - the potential of her water trine as well. Drew Barrymore's words4:
'But I realised, honestly, yeah, my mom locked me up in an institution. Boo hoo! But it did give an amazing discipline. It was like serious recruitment training and boot camp, and it was horrible and dark and very long-lived, a year and a half, but I needed it. I needed that whole insane discipline. My life was not normal. I was not a kid in school with normal circumstances. There was something very abnormal, and I needed some severe shift.'

    Summary

I have ended part one of the article saying:
Is a trine between Scorpio and Pisces harmonious enough to rise above individual differences?
Now I will ask another, slightly modified, question:
Is a trine between Scorpio and Pisces harmonious enough to give benefits?
The answer is, like always, it depends.

Trine, or any other element of the horoscope, is not an independent being, having a fixed role of being a dispenser of harmony and fortunate circumstances. To get a good grip on the trine one has to consider at least the three basic factors: nature of the planets in the aspect, their position in the natal houses and the houses those planets rule.

Next we look the element of the trine. One of the Water trines feature is the past - hidden motivations, conditioned reactions, which after years became natural.

Without identifying what is hidden, what is an emotional residue, one cannot use the full potential of the water trine. The conditioning of Drew Barrymore was her absorbing the methods of dealing with the reality, offered by the acting environment.

Drew Barrymore having the Sun in the 10th house managed to rise in the society, becoming a child actor. The same Sun was trine to Uranus in the 5th house, which hastened her development, worldliness and (violently) opened the door to the World.

Her trine manifested as a fulfilling carrier, being a source of creativity. But the acceleration of Uranus has to be supported with the Jupiter vision and rooted by the wisdom of Saturn.
Thinking about trines in the categories 'easy, everything will work out, full support' makes it easy to fall into the trap of being shortsighted when dealing with circumstances. Drew Barrymore was an example of a past - acting environment, her parents - that had to be dealt with first.

The house Uranus occupies in the horoscope tells where are compelled towards discarding the prohibitions, norms . This is where we want to experience something new, be free. This is not where we want to be constricted, needing to submit.

Drew Barrymore, with her Uranus in the 5th house, had the chance to observe (from childhood) what it means to feel freedom (drugs) and how to have fun in a total way. The world offered her a beautiful fairy tale in the form of being high, a pleasure (5th house) that was only a glimpse of freedom. In spite of such experiences, Drew has never forgotten what she loved the most, what made her Herself - acting.

Now that Drew managed to deal with her past, she has gained precious experience needed to fully use her trine, saying5:

' In my twenties I did want the fairytale,' says Barrymore today. 'But in my thirties I realised there is a next day. It's about a truth and getting to be who you are. The irony is I don't need anyone to give the fairytale to me; I can give it to myself or I will try and provide it for people through different avenues.'
